Bonds Injures Ego

Superstar Barry Bonds was injured on Tuesday when his ego exploded during an interview with ESPN's Dan Patrick.  The Giants' slugger is listed as day-to-day.

Patrick was asking Bonds about his pursuit of Mark McGwire's single-season home run record.  As Bonds explained how his own talent far surpassed mortal men, a loud pop emanated from his cranium and echoed throughout the Giants' locker room.

"Barry was comparing himself to Babe Ruth, Alexander the Great, and Mike Tyson, then all of a sudden, BOOM!" said a stunned Patrick, who was knocked to the floor by the blast.  "It sounded like a cannon going off.  My ears are still ringing."

Teammates found Bonds on the floor, curled up in a fetal position, muttering, "It's not about the record," repeatedly.

"Jeff Kent ran over and asked if he was dead," said Giants outfielder Marvin Benard.  "We told him he wasn't, and Jeff kind of growled and stomped away."

Luckily, Giants medical director Stan Conte said Bonds's injury wasn't serious.  "Usually, an exploded ego will disable a player for months, or even years - look at what happened to John Rocker. But Barry's ego is virtually indestructible.  He's going to have to rehab for a couple of days, just to build it back up again, but he should be back in no time."

Bonds was busy beating his seven year-old son at "Madden 2002" and was unavailable for comment.
