Boras Announces "Rent-ARod" Plan

Superstar agent/Regis Philbin understudy Scott Boras announced Thursday that shortstop Alex Rodriguez would not would not sign with any one team, but would instead be available to all 30 major league teams in the 2001 season through his new "Rent Alex Rodriguez" program.

"Almost every team wants A-Rod," said Boras, who represents the hunky free agent, "but not every team can afford him.  Some teams have balked at our contract requests of $20 million per year.  This program allows Alex to keep ALL of his options open, and test out any teams who are interested in signing him.  We offer great rates to any team who needs A-Rod for just one game, or for those other times when he is really needed for much longer."

Boras presented to the public the rates that a club could pay to rent the superstar for any length of time from one game to an entire month (see chart).

"The monthly price is really the best deal," added Boras. "If you paid the one game rate for a whole month, it comes to over five million dollars, but I'm letting you have him for only $3.5 million! That's almost two million dollars in savings that I pass on directly to YOU, the owners!  How 'bout that, folks! Let's hear it for the savings!

"Plus, if you act now, I'll let you rent ARod for the entire post-season for a mere $4 million.  That's a small-time price to pay for big-time talent!"

Boras went on to describe several additional rules about the rental of Alex Rodriguez, including a lease-to-own program, a layaway plan for small market teams, and additional late fees for not promptly returning A-Rod at the end of the rental period.

Rodriguez himself was busy recording a solo album in his private  studio inside Shea stadium and was unavailable for comment.
