Strawberry Asks for Leniency, Cocaine
Hearings have begun in Tampa to decide punishment for former major leaguer Darryl Strawberry, who disappeared from a drug treatment center on March 29 and surfaced four days later following a drug binge. Strawberry, who is charged with violating house arrest, asked the judge for mercy and understanding, as well as several kilos of cocaine.
"I have made many mistakes," added Strawberry. "But I feel I deserve one more chance. And some cocaine." Strawberry's attorney Joseph Ficarrotta echoed the former slugger's sentiments. "My client needs help," said Ficarotta, "and he can't get the kind of help he needs in jail. Nor can he get the enormous amounts of cocaine he needs in jail. At least not while keeping his pants on." Ficarrotta is seeking to have Strawberry placed in a secure facility that will provide drug treatment and mental-health services, in addition to allowing the eight-time All-Star to continue chemotherapy for colon cancer, as well as go on weekly cocaine binges. "He had been working so hard and accomplished so much over the last five months," the attorney said. "He deserves at least some measure of mercy. And at least an ounce or two of cocaine." |
